Chathostess Aphrodite tends to inspire strong reactions in nearly all those who behold her, in one way or another: lustful, curious, tender, passionate, romantic, etc. In this would-be Manager's song, impulse is towards exploitation of the already somewhat troubled, self-questioning chatroom star. Possible Stage-setting for song: a split stage, divided into larger & smaller sections. In the larger part of stage: A showbiz-type guy, perhaps only in his 30's or at most in early 40's but already looking somewhat world-weary & burnt out (perhaps he even has the stub of a burnt-out cigar in his mouth) stands in semi-darkness in front of a table with a recent-model, large-screen laptop computer on it, & with an image of Aphrodite moving around & posing this way & that on its screen. On table before him is also a clipboard, & piled up issues of show-biz publications such as Variety, misc. multicolored clipboards & also an oversized, old-fashioned Rolodex file such as pre-computer era talent agents used + other standard agent paraphernalia. The man paces back & forth, occasionally doing a semi-comical double-take when beholding this Aphroditic pose or that.
In the smaller part of stage: a chatroom-sized cubicle, with actress playing Aphrodite in it. It's as attemptedly exotic as show-biz type guy's office is businesslike. Room has leopardskin on the wall & a bed with zebra-striped throw-pillows on it. (The actions of The Love Goddess in room with leopardskin on the wall, are the subject of a rather steamy lyric-in-progress for act 1 or 2). Technological Note: Actress playing Aphrodite creates & transmits images via closed circuit webcam to show-biz type guy's laptop screen. After she posts a break-sign with a frozen stillpic of herself in some provocative prose or other, the smaller part of stage with chathostess in it goes dark. Aphrodite's would-be Manager then tosses away cigar stub & bursts into his thus far held-back song:
[ WOULD-BE MANAGER'S SONG ]
DIAMOND
IN
THE
ROUGH
That girl's got real talent, & raw talent though it is
She's got the right stuff--
I've got experience, I can tell right now
That girl's a diamond in the
rough
She's the kind of beginner who could turn out to be a winner
She's got the right stuff
& If she'll just listen to me, it could be easy as 1 2 3 believe me
That girl's a diamond in the rough
She just needs someone around, to unearth her from the ground
& Polish her up until she glitters like pure gold
But there are things she needs to be told
Like showbiz is tough, & raw talent ain't enough
& If she'll just listen to me, it could be easy as 1 2 3 believe me
She's pretty--but she's a diamond in the
rough
That kid could really be a movie star
Drive around in a fancy car
More than a movie-star for all I know, her potential's outta sight
(No limit to her fame, if she were handled right)
Aphrodite could be a modern household name
No limit to my fame
if Aphrodite were a household name
That girl's got real talent, & raw talent though it is
She's got the right stuff--
I've got experience, I can tell right now
That girl's a diamond in the rough
I've got experience, I can tell right now
She's practically crying out to me to show her how!
Why she's practically scratching at my laptop screen--
Wow I can almost hear her scream!--
& Crying out to me to tell her how...
Ok she's pretty--but she's a diamond in the
rough!
